Aphasia Home Café – Socialising while Staying at Home

The Aphasia Café is an initiative of UCC Clinical Therapies Society to support people living with language difficulties following a stroke or other brain injury. Unfortunately, current nationwide restrictions on gathering and socialising had seen the group have to pause their usual meetings. The good news is that they are now launching Ireland’s first Aphasia Home Café where people with aphasia in Ireland can sip their favourite cuppa while chatting with each other and us online.

The online café will run every two weeks from the beginning of May and will continue in the short term while we are having to socially distance. It may continue online if it is welcomed by people with communication difficulties or we may move back to the face-to-face contact when able, or in fact, we may keep both going depending on the needs of the group

Speech and Language Therapy students are volunteering to support the online café and be involved in helping run and manage the online meetings.

You can listen to Helen explain more bout aphasia and their online cafe’s in this video.

Information about the café will be circulated among colleagues who work with people with aphasia across public and community organisations including Speech & Language Therapists and Headway Ireland. However, they also encourage anyone who has or knows someone with post-stroke communication difficulties to get in touch and participate.

Sharing the information widely across the community via radio and other online platforms is welcomed. Information will be provided and updated on their Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/AphasiaCafe/
