Rethink Exercise Programme

Rethink Ireland

Funded by Rethink Ireland, we are delighted to add this new exercise programme to our schedule. Understanding the importance of exercise in stroke recovery, and the lifestyle changes required to include exercise in our daily lives, led us to partnering with Rethink Ireland to deliver this project.

Open to all stroke survivors at every stage on their rehabilitation journey, this nine-week programme is delivered by a physiotherapist led team and includes a pre and post assessment to measure improvements. Following a nurse and physiotherapist assessment, each member is assigned a tailored programme.

As part of this project, ongoing exercise is of huge importance and following completion of the course, tailored exercise videos will be available to each member under a personalised log in on our website.

THERABAND RESISTANCE VIDEO — Resistance Band Upper-Body Strength Session

This session emphasises upper-body strength, posture, and functional control using a resistance band. It is designed for people who can sit or stand safely while performing pulling, pressing, reaching, and overhead movements with light resistance.

You’ll start with a warm-up before moving into repeated sets of resistance band pulling and pushing movements (40 seconds). Light marching or tapping is used between sets to keep the body engaged (20 seconds).

A resistance band anchored to a safe and secure point and a stable chair are required for this exercise session. You can adjust intensity by changing band tension, reducing range, or resting more often, quality movement is the priority.

Always check with a physiotherapist or doctor before starting band-based strengthening, particularly if you have shoulder pain or post-stroke weakness.
